Introduction

The International Labour Organization (ILO), with funding provided by the Government of Sweden, is supporting the Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre (KGRTC) to implement the Skills for Energy in Southern Africa (SESA) Project. This is a three-and-a-half-year intervention with the overall development objective of increasing the uptake of renewable energy, energy efficiency and regional energy integration through skills development in Zambia and the SADC region. It is expected that the project will strengthen KGRTC’s capacity as a Centre of Excellence for energy training in the region and significantly increase the number of power technicians, engineers and managers that are skilled in renewable energy, energy efficiency and regional energy integration. The project will be implemented through a Public Private Public Development Partnership (PPDP) approach.

Course Overview

This course aims to give participants a broad understanding of what goes into the business planning for an Independent Power Production Plant (‘IPP’). It gives and overview of the regional energy sector, studies and documentation required, financing options and market structures. 

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to provide:

  • Participants with the skills needed to ensure that the business is managed in compliance with all the requirements of the project financiers ensuring that operational and other risks are managed.

Course Outcomes

At the end of this training programme, course participants shall be able to:

  • Create a corporate structure for a Special Purpose Vehicle in the Renewable Energy Sector
  • Understand the requirement by financiers for a ringfenced special purpose vehicle
  • Understand the importance of the interlinkage of compliance between the financing documents and all the other project documents
  • Effectively Manage an Asset Management team
  • Establish effective systems to support the functions of the asset management team
  • Maintain Financial Models for the business
  • Understand the requirement for a well-controlled business environment 
  • Manage Project Stakeholders 
  • Appreciate the importance of independence and avoidance of conflict of interest in the management of the business
