SADC Plant Genetic Resources Centre (SPGRC), joins the rest of the world in commemorating the 2023 International Day for Biodiversity

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) through its unit responsible for coordinating conservation and sustainable utilization of plant genetic resources, the SADC Plant Genetic Resources Centre (SPGRC), joins the rest of the world in commemorating the 2023 International Day for Biodiversity under the theme ‘From agreement to action: Build back biodiversity’.

In December 2000, the United Nations (UN) declared 22nd May as the International Day for Biodiversity (IDB), to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on 22nd May 1992; and raise awareness on biodiversity issues. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) seeks to address all threats to biodiversity.

SADC appreciates the importance of biodiversity in its various forms to sustain the livelihoods of humanity and has put in place structures at Member States and Secretariat levels to ensure biodiversity conservation and its sustainable. We firmly believe that biodiversity is the anchor of our region’s industrialisation drive and work through our arms, the Plant Genetic Resources Centre (SPGRC), Natural Resources Management (NRM) and the Environment and Climate Change unit to ensure the SADC region maintains its flora and fauna for the benefit of the whole world.

In commemoration of the International Day for Biodiversity, the SADC would like to call on all stakeholders to also maintain and safeguard the agrobiodiversity now and in the future since this biodiversity especially of plant genetic resources is essential for adapting our food systems to negative climate impacts as we move towards a food secure common future.
