In the meeting, Dr. Lloyd Ngo presented the SESA project overview, followed by Engineer Bright Sepiso presented the KGRTC paper. Director Midas M. Sekgabo gave a brief outline of the role of the Department of Energy.

Besides having a number of international linkages, the Department of Energy oversaw BPC, Botswana Oil, Botswana Energy Regulation Board among others. He stated that the Department dealt with policy and coordination of the energy sector that included Electricity, Renewable Energy, and Energy Efficiency. The Department always planned with a horizon of 5 years. He revealed that the country consumed 100 million liters of oil per month. 18 million Pula had been invested in research in Bio diesel with the University of Botswana. There was an ongoing project on Biomass.

In their 20 years’ plan, the current 2% contribution of renewable energy should move to 30% by the year 2030. With their known 212 billion tons of coal reserves, the country could have gone on forever with electricity from coal. Due to climate change issues, they have to look into the direction of renewable energies. Currently, they are putting up a new 300 MW coal fired power station

The Department of Energy director highlighted the challenge they face with regards to specialized training.

Director Chinkusu recommended that KGRTC should enter into a partnership with Botswana International University of Science and Technology, based in Palapye and that The officer in charge of Energy Efficiency should be invited to KGRTC.

The Department of Energy also highlighted the need for trainings in Energy Planning.
