A Team from COMESA visited Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre for a meeting on the Enhancement of a Sustainable Regional Energy Market (ESREM) in Eastern Africa, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean Region (EA-SA-IO). The Comesa team which was led by Project Manager-ESREM Eng. Yohane Mukabe was met by KGRTC Director Eng. Kaela Siame in the company of Acting Training Manager Eng. Mpezilwe Simukoko. Other members of the Comesa team included Project Officer Mr. Abdelhafiz Alabbas and Finance Expert Katende Chelemu.
The program is funded by the European Union (EU) to support soft infrastructure on energy in Eastern Africa, Southern Africa, and the Indian Ocean Region.
The program focusses mainly on the electricity sector and contributes primarily to the progressive achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 of ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, SDG 5 of achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls and SDG 12 of ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns.
Comesa identified KGRTC as one of the institutions that can help achieve this objective. KGRTC has since 1989 offered training programs for the energy sector for utilities in the SADC Region. in order to facilitate the implementation of ESREM capacity building programs by KGRTC, a memorandum of understanding will be signed by COMESA-Regional Association of Energy Regulators for Eastern and Southern Africa (RAERESA) and KGRTC. The team took a tour of the classrooms, guest rooms, training laboratories power systems simulator and the wind energy measuring site.
